#TurksandCaicos, October 24, 2022 – The police have been called in after threats were made against a civil servant by unnamed social media users according to Minister of Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development, Akierra Missick.
“I want to make it abundantly clear, that I do not take threats against my staff or anyone lightly. A report has been made to the police department on behalf of our team member as it relates to that threat. We want to advise the writer of that message, direct threats to the employees at PPID will not be condoned.”
The threats were accompanied by accusations of corruption against members of her team which had been made over WhatsApp and were posted to Facebook. She described them as unfounded.
“As it relates to the WhatsApp message that was flying around that names specific parties, an investigation was conducted and it was found that the accusations were baseless,” said the Minister in The House of Assembly on Wednesday
For future reference, Missick explained the ministry has now set up an email to which individuals can send any complaints.
“We have asked our colleagues at the unit of digitization to create an email address where persons can share their signed statement or knowledge of behavior that involves the staff of PPID and our various departments that they feel is unlawful.”
Minister Missick reminded that with free speech comes a level of consequence.
“This is a small country, but we have an international reach.”
She maintained that for messages with unsubstantiated accusations to leave the TCI and be shared internationally was simply inappropriate.
