#TurksandCaicos, September 2, 2022 – The community of Duck Yard will be under observation soon, as the National Security Council aims to lessen informal settlements across the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The Government says, an urgent data driven strategy is needed to deal with the ‘rampant spread of informal settlements’, and the community was identified as the ‘most prominent’ in terms of informal settlements.
A press release citing the potential for negative social consequences arising from these settlements said, “The TCIG is therefore undertaking an in-depth study of informal settlements throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands in an attempt to understand the ecosystems of such communities.”
The government says, the communities will be improved and reshaped, and the study will help to better understand:
the size and demographics of the population
the conditions and circumstances that stimulated the formation of the community
the pull factors of the community
the ecosystems within the community
the challenges experienced within and by the community; and
the unique characteristics that contribute to the prosperity and expansion of the community and its’ eco-social impact on the country
The TCIG Statistical Department will be entering the Duck Yard community during August-September 2022, and residents are urged to cooperate with them.
