Premier Washington Misick along with Rachel Taylor Education Minister and Rufus Ewing, Former Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, visited the campus of Howard University and made a courtesy call on the University’s President, Dr. Wayne Frederick

According to a press release Misick and Taylor, sat with President Frederick to “discuss ways in which the Turks and Caicos Islands can reignite the relationship once shared with the institution and strengthen the TCI’s ability to access another world class learning facility.”

Taylor highlighted possible programs in areas that correspond to the Turks and Caicos Islands national interests for the its continued development. These included sciences, business, technology, and the performing arts.

The 154 year old Howard University is a Historically Black college or University  (HBCU)  founded in 1867 and is a leader in STEM fields. The National Science Foundation says Howard is the top producer of African-American undergraduates who later earn science and engineering doctoral degrees. Additionally Howard University has educated some of TCI’s most prominent young professionals.

The visit comes only days after the delegation met with two Caribbean universities on a visit to Jamaica; namely: the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology and announced the formal commencement of the creation of the Hamilton University School of Medicine (HUSM) within the British overseas territory.

The meetings are in an effort to increase the Turks and Caicos’ access to higher education.
