#Canada, August 28, 2022 – Another western country is reaching out to Taiwan, openly defying China’s anger. Canadian politicians have now scheduled a visit to the China adjacent nation according to the Canada-Taiwan Friendship Group.

A friendship group is not a parliamentary arm of government, and is not supported by taxpayers, though they are usually headed by members of parliament.

Taiwan has been a revolving door of US representatives in recent weeks starting with Nancy Pelosi, US House Speaker, and culminating with the announcement of a new trade deal between the two nations.

Beijing has threatened “forceful measures” if the Canadians engage in what they have announced will be a trade trip. Judy Sgro,  the Friendship Group Chair, told CBC news a group of politicians was planning to head to the nation by October at the earliest.

China considers Taiwan to be under its rule under the One-China policy which Western nations, including Canada and the US ascribe to. China reacted with sanctions drills and military drills to the US visit.

Regardless, according to local media, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters the government would respect the decision of the politicians, and said Canada found China’s ‘belligerence’ troubling.

The Taiwanese Government is sponsoring the Canadian trip.
