#Philippines, August 28, 2022 – Students in the Philippines returned to school after 2 years on Monday only to be forced out of the classroom again by Tropical Storm Florita.

Thousands of people have been evacuated because of the resultant heavy flooding in the country, and at least 3 have been killed.

The Philippines had one of the longest COVID lockdowns in regard to in-person schooling. While the US and much of the Caribbean opened in the first quarter of 2022, Filipino children’s classes remained digital.

The much-awaited return was ruined for students, especially in the north after Florita drenched the islands.

Photos from the event show students hurrying home in ankle-deep water with their bags raised over their heads. Other photos showed students still writing in notebooks as flood water covered their feet.

Filipino authorities had warned that landslides and flooding would be likely as Florita crossed the islands.

The storm moved away from the Philippines on Thursday and is now moving toward China.
