#Canada, August 26, 2022 – Germany is hoping Canada can help ease its energy burden after being practically cut off from Russian energy and having to institute measures to ration heat and electricity at home.

Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany, visited the North American nation during a three-day official trip and met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau announced that the two countries would be establishing a Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance.

The alliance is in an effort to wean Germany off of its dependence on Russian oil and move towards more climate-safe energy sources. The two countries say they want to establish a supply corridor with the intent to start exporting energy resources by 2025

In addition to energy, Canada and Germany are also seeking to go green together in transportation. The Canadian government signed agreements with German carmakers Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, to develop supply chains for minerals essential to electric vehicles.

Though the deals aim to ease Germany’s dependence on Russia, they do not appear to be immediate short-term solutions, and while Russia has not yet completely cut the European country off, there are fears that that might happen in the upcoming winter.
