August 5, 2022 – JetBlue and Spirit anticipate a revenue spike of $11.9 billion and Spirit employees will be integrated into the Jetblue family in the coming months once the merger between the two aircraft carriers is solidified.
Spirit announced its agreement to merge with JetBlue airlines in an about face decision after its initial deal with Frontier fell through.
JetBlue made an unsolicited offer to buy Spirit stock after Spirit and Frontier had already announced their plan to merge in early 2022. At the time Spirit had only said it would do what was best for shareholders in terms of picking a partner.
The merger with JetBlue makes the combined air carrier the 5th largest in America. The Spirit/Frontier merger would have dwarfed JetBlue becoming the 5th largest carrier.
JetBlue says they plan to bring the ‘JetBlue experience’ to all aircraft. It is unclear whether all the planes will be rebranded with the JetBlue logo or not.
“The four largest carriers control more than 80% of the market. Creating a low-fare, customer-centric challenger with size and scale is the best opportunity to disrupt legacy carrier pricing in the current landscape,” a JetBlue press release explained.
In terms of size the airline says the combined airline will have a fleet of 458 aircraft and an order book of over 300 Airbus aircraft.
