#TurksandCaicos, July 25, 2022 – The Chalk Sound police station is once again open to the public after nearly ten months.

The information was given via press release on Tuesday. Though initial police communication had said the station would only be down for sixteen weeks, officers were displaced and residents have been without their nearby services since September 2021, both forced to use the Grace Bay station.

A fire last September that gutted the building had prompted the closure. The police had police reported the cause of the fire was “non-suspicious” in initial press releases.

While no one was hurt all of the furniture and some files and technology in the building were destroyed including files for court cases. Several days later an unnamed officer revealed that Sergeant Robin Williams was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the fire.

There were also allegations of stolen cash in the amount of $190,000 which the police did not confirm.

The then Acting Commissioner of Police Kendall Grant said, “It is very regrettable and inappropriate that a member of the Force has disclosed the notice of placing an officer on administrative leave, but I can confirm that it has been necessary for this to be done as part of the investigation.”

Since then there have been little to no updates on the fire and the allegations surrounding it. The press release offered no information on the progress of the investigation which had been opened into the fire, nor were there any updates on the suspended officer.

The Chalk Sound police station has suffered fires that have led to the destruction of property and/or important case files multiple times calling into question whether the level of security surrounding stations and their comments is high enough. Still the Police remain tight-lipped.
