#Suriname, July 6, 2022 – “If we will agree to design, as quick as possible, a common strategy to speed up the exploitation of the gas, then as a region, you can support the entire world and particularly Caribbean region with fertilizers,” said The President of Suriname, Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi.

While speaking at a press conference, Santokhi said that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) should seek to fast-track the production of the abundant natural gas reserves from Suriname, Guyana and Trinidad. The result is to fulfil the regional demand for fertilizer.

Hinting at the Russia/Ukraine war and the impact it has had and will have on food security in the Caribbean, Suriname’s president said the existing situation is an opportunity for CARICOM and that there is now a need for the development of a regional energy strategy.

Meanwhile, CARICOM Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett said discussions are underway as energy security is a top priority across the region.
