#UnitedKingdom, July 15, 2022 – Boris Johnson, faced with a mass exodus of ministers in a demonstration of no confidence was last week forced to announce his resignation.

Now, his former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak has topped the first round of votes for candidates to replace Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative Party and future Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Sunak was seen as the hero of the pandemic handing out financial packages for Britons in lockdown left and right. But some of the shine dulled when his wife was found not to be paying taxes to Britain and he was also fined for attending a party while the country was in lockdown.

Depending on how many candidates there are in the race, the UK election for Prime Minister will run by round until there are only two people left. The first round required at least 30 votes.

There were eight candidates in the race along with Sunak who bagged eighty-eight votes, Penny Mordaunt, Minister of Trade got sixty-seven votes; Liz Truss, Foreign Minister bagged fifty votes; Kemi Badenoch, Member of Parliament received forty votes; Tom Tugendhat, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee got thirty-seven votes; Suella Braverman barely scraped by with thirty-two while two others were eliminated.

Sunak was one of the first to turn in his resignation last week starting off the avalanche of resignation letters that forced  Boris Johnson to tender his resignation.

Polling companies in the UK show there is great public support for Sunak and finger his main rival as Penny Mordaunt. Another Ballot is set for tomorrow and ballots will continue until two candidates remain.

The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom will be chosen by July 21st.
