#TurksandCaicos, July 25, 2022 – One driver fled the scene and another was seriously injured in a traffic accident on the night of Sunday July 17. The Police have confirmed the incident. Videos of the accident showing an injured person being placed on a stretcher by emergency personnel fueled concern from Islanders. The victim’s full body including the head appeared to be covered in the social media circulated video; usually a sign that the individual did not survive.

Police say that person, a 24 year old woman, while badly injured is alive and undergoing treatment.

Royal TCI Police received reports of the accident, a two car motor vehicle collision involving a Nissan Atlas and a Suzuki  along Millennium Highway in Providenciales, about 10 pm Sunday night. The driver of the Nissan Atlas vehicle, fled the scene and there have been no reports of a capture of a suspect in the case.

The woman driver of the black Suzuki vehicle was transported by ambulance to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for treatment. The vehicle received extensive damages.

Drivers in the Turks and Caicos are required to stop in the event of an accident by law contained in the Road Traffic Ordinance which says.

“In any case in which, owing to the presence of a vehicle on a road an accident occurs whereby damage or injury is caused to any person, animal, vehicle or property, the driver of the vehicle shall stop and if required to do so by any person having reasonable grounds for so requiring, give his name and address and also the name and address of the owner and the registration number of the vehicle.”

Police say the incident is being investigated by the Traffic Enforcement Unit.
