#UnitedKingdom, June 18, 2022 – The UK is scrambling to find a way to secure the lives of two British men sentenced to death in Russia over fighting for Ukraine.

The men, 28-year-old Aiden Aslin, from Newark, and 48-year-old Shaun Pinner, from Watford, were captured by Russian forces and accused of breaking the law in a court in Russian-controlled east Ukraine.  They have been sentenced to death along with a Moroccan man for being mercenaries.  The men and the UK deny this saying they were active-duty soldiers protected by the Geneva Convention.

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has called the death sentences given to two men an “egregious breach of the Geneva convention”.

“They are prisoners of war. This is a sham judgment with absolutely no legitimacy … My thoughts are with the families. We continue to do everything we can to support them.” She said.

Russia has defended the trials and says the men have one month to appeal. If successful they will serve 25 years to life in a Russian prison.
