#Nigeria, June 6, 2022 – At least 50 Nigerian churchgoers were murdered Sunday morning when gunmen attacked St Francis Catholic Church with guns and explosives during services.

Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole told the Associated Press that several children were included in the dead. It is not yet clear what prompted the attack on the church and no one has taken responsibility for the act.

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu condemned the ‘unprovoked’ act  in a statement saying “It is a black Sunday in Owo. Our hearts are heavy. Our peace and tranquillity have been attacked by the enemies of the people. This is a personal loss, an attack on our dear state.”

Nigeria has the world’s sixth highest Christian population but more people are being killed for being Christian in Nigeria than anywhere else in the world, says Catholic World Report, an international religious news magazine. Nigeria alone accounted for 90 percent of Christians killed for their faith worldwide in the year 2018.

Pope Francis the leader of the Roman Catholic said  he  “prays for the victims and for the country, painfully attacked at a time of celebration, and he entrusts everyone to the Lord, that God might send His Spirit to console them.
