Getting Prepared

#TheBahamas, June 9, 2022 – Representatives from 14 emergency support functions gathered for a Ministry for Grand Bahama and Grand Bahama Disaster Consultative Committee meeting on Thursday, June 2 at the Grand Lucayan Resort. The meeting was held so that the departments could give updates, share their concerns, and offer suggestions for improvements.

In the absence of the Minister for Grand Bahama the Hon. Ginger Moxey, Ministry consultant Jewel Edwards, described the session as “mission crucial” adding that the group has the government’s support to make the necessary adjustments for climate change. Although Grand Bahama is still in recovery mode following the devastation of Hurricane Dorian in September 2019, with the various groups working together, and all hands-on deck, the necessary preparations for the current season will be in place and the island will be “Grand Bahama Strong”.

Island Administrator for the City of Freeport, Joseph Ferguson who also chairs the committee urged those present to work together to protect the island.

Reports were given on transportation, communications, public works, and engineering, planning and information, mass care and shelter services, relief supplies and distribution, health and medical services, hazardous material land and marine, along with a presentation from the Met Department.

Hurricane season started on June 1 and will run through November.
