#WorldHealthorganization, May 27, 2022 – Tedros Adenhom Ghebreyesus will serve another term as the Director- General of the World Health Organization.

Ghebreyesus who has become a steadfast voice throughout the COVID19 pandemic was sworn in and signed his contract on Tuesday May 24th at the 75th World Health Assembly.

The theme for this year’s assembly is “Health for Peace, Peace for Health”. The WHO has repeatedly condemned attacks on healthcare workers during the war in Ukraine and Ghebreyesus himself has condemned the lack of attention that war torn areas in Africa including his native Ethiopia.

Ghebreyesus was moved to tears during his address to the gathered attendees as he told them of the preventable death of his younger brother and exposure to war at a young age over 50 years ago

“That’s why when I visited Ukraine and saw especially the kids, I felt what I felt” he explained.

“When I visited Ukraine it was the image of 50 years in my head ..so visible, so clear.. that’s what I don’t want to happen to anyone so I hope peace will come.”

He declared his renewal as not only a personal thing but an admission of trust in all of the WHO staff.

“The WHO is full of staff who know what duty is and whether someone is watching or not they do their job well… It’s that sort of dedication  and commitment that gave me the energy at the start of the pandemic and lasted the way through.”

Ghebreyesus’s term will last for five more years from August this year to August 2027.
