#TurksandCaicos, April 4, 2022 – As we draw nearer to the June 1 start of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane season, a Climate Change Summit is being birthed for the Turks and Caicos Islands, and based on data revealed so far, it will exposure the environmental dire straits of Small Islands States.

Officials admit the Climate Change Summit was inspired by COP26 the UN 2021 Climate Conference held in Glasglow at the close of 2021.  The Turks and Caicos summit will welcome fellow British Overseas Territories; named were Bermuda and Cayman Islands.

Josephine Connolly, TCI Minister of Tourism and the Environment made the announcement about the Summit on April 1 at the Environmental Centre, the Bight Providenciales.

“As a territory comprising low lying islands and one whose economy depends strongly on its pristine coastline the Turks and Caicos Islands has a great interest in the issue of climate change.  The Ministry of Tourism believes that urgent action is needed,” said the minister when she addressed a hybrid audience on Friday.

Keynote speaker for the Climate Change Summit is: G Wayne Panton, Premier of the Cayman Islands.  Premier Panton is also the minister with responsibility for the Environment in Cayman.

Hon Connolly said:  “Climate change might seem abstract but it is and will continue to affect all of us, it is only through collaboration today that we can ensure a resilient tomorrow.”
