TCI Maritime Officers Attend Maritime Training Workshop in The United Kingdom

#UnitedKingdom, March 17, 2022 – Maritime Officers from the Turks and Caicos Islands Department of Fisheries and Marine Resource Management, Maritime Unit are currently attending a 2-week training course in the United Kingdom on Unclassed Vessels, MARPOL Survey, Safety Management and Security from March 7th -18th 2022 funded by the United Kingdom Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UKMCA) and Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF).

Upon completion of the training, Maritime Officers will receive certificates in the following areas:

Unclassed Vessels

Survey techniques and practices for steel vessels, their machinery and systems that are not “classed” Generally, covers vessels under 24m.

 

MARPOL Survey

Knowledge of the main elements of the International Convention for Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) including procedures for conducting vessel surveys and inspections on Flag or Port State, determining whether all operational requirements of MARPOL Annexes have been met.

Safety Management (ISM/DSM) Lead Auditor and International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) Verification:

Adequate competence and skills for performing International Safety Management (ISM) and Domestic Safety Management (DSM) verification audits. This includes ISM/DSM Code such as elements of conformity or nonconformity, mandatory rules and regulations and certification requirements; technical or operational aspects of safety management; assessing whether the safe practices recommended by IMO, Administrations, classification societies and maritime industry organizations have been taken into account. Security aspects includes background to the maritime security framework; ship security arrangements, security contingencies and response; training and drills.

This training course is not only beneficial to the Maritime Officers as it enhances their ability to effectively perform their duties as surveyors/inspectors, however, holistically to the Turks and Caicos Islands Maritime and Tourism Industry as we strive to meet our international obligation relating to safety of life and shipping, prevention of pollution from ships operating within our territorial waters.
