#TurksandCaicos, March 21, 2022 – Five girls are currently residents of the Safe House in Grand Turk; the Department of Social Welfare last Wednesday revealed that the former Juvenile Center is converted and is a Safe House for children who are in need of safeguarding.

The young ladies currently resident would have been exposed to abuse or neglect or abandonment or are considered beyond parental control explained the Department in a media statement today.

The House is aimed at providing care and protection for children brought to the Department.  Described as having a homey feel; the design and décor, all work in synch to create a worthwhile and enjoyable living experience.  There are 12 staff members at the Safe House including House Manager, Assistant House Manager, Caregivers, Wardens and Security officers, Cleaner, and Driver.

Some positions are vacant and will be filled, said Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Tiffany Thomas Browne, who also informed: “The Department has great aspirations for the Safe House; the growth, development and overall wellbeing of the children placed there. We look forward to a cohesive team and great results coming out of the Safe House. We say a special thank you to our team members and all others involved in the transitioning process.”

It is a banner accomplishment for the Department, which informed in a statement that all five girls are attending school, receiving monthly counselling sessions, are in contact with relatives and are involved in extra-curricular activities including attending church.

They are described as “being acclimated into society as a result of the support and intervention.”
