#TurksandCaicos, March 15, 2022 – Salt Cay residents will be able to commute more easily as the bridge repairs on the tiny island are just about complete, according to Akierra Missick, Minister of Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development.

“We are reconstructing the Salt Cay Bridge and the structure is currently two feet out of the water.  And will be completed within the upcoming week,” said Minister Misick during her Ministerial statement last Thursday in the House of Assembly.

The bridge, when re-opened will host both regular vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

In January the Salt Cay bridge was declared unsafe by the island’s District Commissioner; “the bridge in the North District has sustained damage and is thus structurally compromised. Accordingly ALL VEHICLES, cars and golf carts, should refrain from using the bridge until the extent of the damage has been assessed.”

A heavy duty vehicle, punched a hole in the bridge making it unsuitable for use.  A temporary footbridge was constructed and residents were thanked by the Minister for their patience during the repairs.

Work to restore the bridge was done by the Public Works Department through its Temporary Workers Program.
