February 25, 2022 – A suspected outbreak of bird flu in Indiana in the US has sparked concern in the United States and that concern could trickle down to the islands. It could be another factor rocketing the price of consumer goods.

The virus was initially suspected on a farm in Indiana and confirmation is still pending from the US Department of agriculture. Despite this all 29,000 birds were immediately killed to prevent potential spread, but now suspected cases of the virus have been detected on a second turkey farm not far away from the original site.

Both farms are under quarantine.

Poultry farms in Kentucky and Virginia have been confirmed to have the highly lethal form of avian influenza. Bird flu is deadly to all types of birds.

The United States is the world’s top producer of poultry and the number two exporter in volume and if the outbreak is more extensive than previously thought the price of chicken and turkey could rise exponentially.
