#Kingston, January 9, 2022 – Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, is again assuring that the Government will no longer be resorting to lockdowns as part of strategies to contain coronavirus (COVID-19) transmission. He reiterated this position while fielding questions from journalists during a digital press conference on Sunday (January 9).
“I know there is great tension in the air. [But] I have been very clear in Parliament… to say we are not going back to lock downs,” he said.
The Prime Minister maintained, however, that the responsibility to contain COVID-19 transmission is now in the hands of citizens, who he said must take steps to protect themselves while encouraging them to “get vaccinated”. Mr. Holness noted that multiple vaccination sites and several immunisation options are available across the country.
More than 250 vaccination outlets are in place islandwide and booster shots are on offer at permanent immunisation sites.
There are four brands of COVID-19 vaccines available: AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Sinopharm, and Johnson and Johnson. The Ministry of Health and Wellness has advised that the best protection against the virus is vaccination. This is in addition to adherence to the infection prevention and control measures including mask wearing; physical distancing; and frequent and thorough hand washing or sanitising.
