#TurksandCaicos, January 28, 2022 – There was no prison break last Saturday (January 22) night, instead it was a protest by inmates who were being held at the Green Door Facility in Grand Turk which caused disruption to the quiet neighbourhood of the Ridge; inmates claimed inhumane conditions in what was described a Covid quarantine.

Fourteen inmates, either confirmed to have Covid-19 or feared to have the virus, were held at the site in a measure to stop spread of the contagion at the Department of Corrections, formerly known as Her Majesty’s Prison.

“No running water, no showers and no flushing toilets for over a week,” were the alleged conditions at the Green Door facility in Grand Turk and they reportedly led to a skirmish on Saturday; by Sunday morning the Green Door had been torched.

In a letter to the Superintendent on January 22, Finbar Grant, the attorney for one of the inmates who was held at Green Door for what they say was an extended period of time explained that his client – Jude Denejour – was “brutally beaten by one of the correction officers at the Green Door…. that client complained of having severe swelling.”

On the basis of human rights to which Denejour is entitled, Finbar Grant spent the better part of the week requesting the Prison cease from denying his client medical care at hospital.

Grant said the Department of Corrections claims their medics had already tended to the inmate; he and the others have since been returned to lock up at HMP.

An off-duty corrections officer is fingered for the alleged abuse; he has since been suspended, reports say.

Authorities have not addressed any of these claims, reports and serious allegations publically or officially.
