December 7, 2021 – The Cayman Islands have deployed an H145 helicopter and crew from their Air Operations Unit (AOU) to the TCI to help defend the borders from unlawful migration.

The move follows the tragic drowning of seven irregular migrants off the coast of Providenciales last week.

The helicopter and crew will remain on the island for two weeks and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCPIS) says this is the first of two, 2 week-long deployments

The deployment which is being funded by the UK is not the first of its kind.  A team was deployed to the TCI following hurricane Irma in 2017.

Premier of the Cayman Islands Hon. G. Wayne Panton expressed pleasure at the deployment.

He said “It is always wonderful to be able to assist when our sister British Overseas Territories are in need…We are in a very fortunate position to be able to lend our support. We know that TCI would reciprocate if we found ourselves in need.”

There has, however, been no official word from the Royal TCI Police Force on what strategies will be employed to best make use of the loan.
