#TurksandCaicos, December 31, 2021 – The Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) says the TCI tourism sector is rebounding well. Despite a spate of flight cancellations across the world in light of Omicron fears and weather conditions TCI Hoteliers are seeing good occupancy numbers.
Stacy Cox, Executive Director of the TCHTA told Magnetic Media, “Our accommodation sector during the holidays is seeing pre-COVID19 numbers in occupancy despite several cancellations due to the emergence of the Omicron virus.”
Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority acting CEO, Floyd Ingham had concrete arrival data which verified Cox’s claims. He told Magnetic Media, ““The Turks and Caicos was not impacted by the [flight] cancellations.”
Ingham said that from Dec 20th to 27th there were 15,530 arrivals to the country along with 14,095 departures. This arrival number he said was only slightly less than the arrivals for the same period in 2019 pre-pandemic and was a big improvement from pandemic stricken 2020.
Mrs. Cox said that hoteliers were cautiously optimistic that the numbers would stay strong for the next few weeks provided there was no major shock to the market due to challenges with airline shortages, Omicron and other factors that could negatively impact the industry.
She said safety protocols were still being observed in the industry.
“We are continuously reminding our staff and guest to wear masks, and wash hands to do our part in curbing the effects of COVID-19.”
