#TurksandCaicos, November 5, 2021 – On Saturday, 30th October 2021, Eco Warriors, an Environmental Youth Group based in Providenciales, hosted a Nationwide cleanup campaign. The goal of the cleanup was to engage young people to protect the environment and mainstream environmental education. The campaign was dubbed a success: as HJ Robinson High, Grand Turk collected 70 bags, Raymond Gardiner High, North Caicos collected 63 bags, and Louise Garland High in Providenciales collected 23 bags.

Mr. Luis Serpas who is currently a Marine Biology Major at the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College and President of Eco Warriors commented, “The future lies in the hands of our youth and we must educate them on the immensity of taking care of the earth because there is no future without an earth”.

The overall goal of Eco Warriors is to focus on Sustainable Development Goal 13 with an emphasis on Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action.

The Hon. Rachel Taylor, Minister with responsibility for Youth Affairs commented, “It is important to continue the encouragement of partnerships with youth groups and other stakeholders to ensure sustainable development for the future. It is also essential to instill in young people the importance of community service. Through the Department of Youth Affairs, the current Youth Policy encourages youth led initiatives to create an awareness related to Climate Change and Environment Sustainability”.

Thanks to all stakeholders who played an instrumental role, building partnerships to ensure that Turks and Caicos is Beautiful by Nature. The cleanup campaign would not have been a success without The Department of Youth Affairs, The EG Youth Centre, Rotaract, Grace Bay Car Rentals, The National Trust, The Department of Environment and Coastal Resources and our various high schools.

This environmental movement will be an annual effort to educate our youth, our future stewards of the earth.

Note: Eco Warriors led by Luis and Jeffrey Nicholas, host weekly cleanup campaigns on Providenciales in collaboration with Rotaract. Should you want to volunteer or start a weekly cleanup movement on your island, reach out to Mr. Luis at luis11.serpas@gmail.com.
