#TurksandCaicos, August 11, 2021 – Slow tourism bounce back for Grand Turk, Salt Cay and South Caicos is the reason Government should consider a second stimulus for residents of those islands, says the Leader of the Opposition, Edwin Astwood.

In a statement issued Friday, the LOO laid out his reasoning and said the amount should be at least $1,000 adding that the slowed economy of Grand Turk in particular is causing a defection of residents.

“This lack of employment and business inactivity is greatly seen in Grand Turk, where the prolonged absence of cruise ship visits is driving half of the population under and closer to living in poverty.

Persons are leaving their homes in order to seek employment in Providenciales,” he said.

Astwood is calling on Government to give the stimulus grants based on the size and nature of the businesses and concessions are encouraged to help jumpstart Grand Turk in time for a return of cruise ships.
