#TurksandCaicos, July 7, 2021 – With COVID-19 cases down and vaccinations increasing, youth all around the Turks and Caicos are assuredly looking forward to a summer outdoors. The Turks and Caicos Islands Sports Commission is poised to ensure that young athletes not only enjoy a summer outside, but that their time is spent developing their skills in Sport. With this, The Commission is offering camp programs to give local youth athletes an engaging, educational, and exciting summer sports camp experience. First up is the Sports Performance Camp which will begin in Bottle Creek, North Caicos on July 8, 2021. The countrywide camps are being facilitated by Director of Sports Performance, Travis Crittenden, and a team of coaches and volunteers.

The Sports Performance camp is geared towards allowing facilitators to

  1. Observe athletes and evaluate athletic ability to identify talent.
  2. Introduce concept of Sports Performance Training to the community.
  3. Set the standard for training mentality, effort, and attitude.
  4. Educate athletes on the mental, physical, and educational demands involved with progressing to the next level.
  5. Identify local coaches interested in learning more about sports performance.
  6. Teach coaches more about sports performance and how they can better help their athletes moving forward.
  7. Provide a safe, fun, educational and productive environment for the whole community to see some of the many benefits of sports.

Camps will run Thursday-Saturday each week in the month of July. The dates for the various islands are as follows:

  • July 8-10 (North Caicos)
  • July 15-17 (South Caicos)
  • July 22-24 (Grand Turk)
  • July 29-31 (Providenciales)

The Providenciales Camp will serve as the Grand Finale for the 4-week program, and will include guest facilitators from the United States, namely, former NFL linebacker for the Green Bay Packers, Hannibal Navies and former running back for the New England Patriots, J.R. Redmond. Both Navies and Redmond come with extensive resumes with experience in Youth Development and Sports Education.

The camp is an invitation only program, with athletes ages 13-19, selected based on recommendations by their High School coaches/Physical Education teachers. Through these camps, The Commission hopes to fulfil its goal of providing our athletes with the skills required to attain podium victories at regional and international competition.
