#TurksandCaicos, May 18, 2021 – Though the current flag we see now was adopted in modern history, Haiti today celebrates the creation of its first flag which came 218 years ago, the year before the country gained independence from France, following a revolution which ended in 1804.

Every May 18 is Haitian Flag day and while in this dispensation of a coronavirus pandemic and frustrations with cost burden of repatriating illegal Haitian migrants celebrations will be toned down, many remember the pioneering and impressive force of the people of Haiti reflected valiantly in their flag.

It is a bicolor, horizontal flag of blue and red, punctuated by white rectangle at its center featuring the coat of arms. The coat of arms includes a lush green hilltop, a trophy of weaponry, and a palm tree.

A white ribbon on the hillside states: L’Union Fait la Force, which in English means: “Unity is Strength”.
