April 9, 2021 – STATEMENT:   At the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission I have sworn in Mr Carlos Simons QC to be a Judge in the Turks and Caicos for one year, commencing 1st April.

This will strengthen the Bench, temporarily, not least to help reduce the number of offenders who we have on remand who could not receive a Jury trial during COVID.  Justice Simons can also support on Civil cases as needed. This is the second time I have had the privilege to appoint Mr Simons – who became the first Turks and Caicos Islands Judge to be appointed in February 2020 to cover a gap on the Bench.

My hope is that as a more permanent position emerges his experience in the role will allow him to compete – with the best in the region – in an interview process run by the JSC; which will consolidate the steps forward that are being taken in our wider Justice sector under the guidance of our Chief Justice.
