#TurksandCaicos, March 15, 2021 – Inmates of Her Majesty’s Prison in Grand Turk are pushing for the right to collect the $1,000 stimulus ordered by Government to be for all Turks and Caicos citizens and British Overseas Territory citizens who have been living here the past 12 months; relatives inform they have applied for their incarcerated loved ones with positive results of confirmation numbers and approvals issued, but are stumped about what happens when it is time for collection of the cheques – which have to be in person.
The
inmates, who argue that they too have families, including children, on the
outside who can use the support are getting an audience.
The
Magnate is told the David Bowden, Prison Superintendent is responsive to the
inmates and has presented their points for consideration.
Relatives
say at this stage, they view the intervention of the Superintendent as positive
and are hopeful the legal argument that there has been no distinction given to
the ‘type of Turks and Caicos Islander who is qualified for the cash’ will mean
they get it.
Relatives
want to be given permission to collect the cheques on behalf of the qualified
inmates.
