#TurksandCaicos, February 9, 2021 – First the United States experienced slow uptake of the Covid-19 vaccine among the black population, now a new report reveals younger healthcare workers are opting to wait before taking the globally-touted remedy.
It is estimated that 30 percent of these
workers do not want the vaccine, some because they are pregnant or considering
becoming pregnant soon. Ohio has been
cited in media reports due to the low number – 40 percent – of aged care
workers taking the free, voluntary vaccine.
Not resisting the vaccine are those who
have witnessed the ravages of the coronavirus on patients in an up close and
personal way.
This trend of some medical staff balking at
the opportunity as first in line for the shots is also raising red flags in
Georgia.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution carried a
report on February 5 informs that 14,000 care givers had been infected, 29 of
whom have died due to the coronavirus.
Data in the Federal Nursing Homes report
expose that 80 percent of nursing home residents have had the jab, but there is
less interest among those taking care of these elderly residents.
Only around 30 percent have been inoculated
in Atlanta, and even in homes where there has been dismal death tolls, administering
of the vaccine to caregivers has been shockingly low.
In one case as low as nine percent; this
despite Georgia last week recording its deadliest period since the virus hit
with 4,000 deaths in long-term care facilities across the state.
A report on Monday on CNN informs that CVS
Health, which is administering the vaccine in 49 states said: “We are seeing more vaccine hesitancy among
staff when compared with residents.
The US Surgeon General tells those
administering the jabs to move on.
“If healthcare workers don’t want to get
these vaccines as you saw in some places, like you saw in Ohio where 60 percent
of nursing home staff said they didn’t want it, then we need to move on to the
older than 75 group.”
More than 27
million Americans have received a first dose, and more than six million have
been fully vaccinated for Covid-19.
