#TurksandCaicos, February 11, 2021 – Three more are dead and the TCI Hospitals and the Ministry of Health say they are due to Covid-19.
Two media statements
issued overnight gave the most grim update since the pandemic reached these
shores; three people losing their lives within a 24-hour period were later
diagnosed with the coronavirus.
There are currently 394
active cases of Covid-19 and 89 new infections have been recorded in the past
48-hours, including nine new infections within the tiny island community of
Middle Caicos.
On Wednesday morning,
the Ministry of Health said: “Today,
Wednesday 10th February 2021, the Ministry of Health reports
its tenth Covid-19 related death. The death occurred in Providenciales. Efforts
are underway to notify the next of kin and contact tracing is ongoing.
The thoughts and
prayers of the Ministry of Health are with the family and friends of this
individual.”
By nightfall, there was
another report from the TCI Hospitals.
“Turks and Caicos Islands
Hospital is saddened to announce the country’s eleventh and twelfth COVID-19
related deaths.
A middle-aged patient was transported to the
Emergency Department at Cockburn Town Medical Centre via ambulance in critical
condition. Efforts to revive the patient were unsuccessful and the patient
passed away on Wednesday, February 10th, 2021. The patient was later confirmed
to be positive for COVID-19 disease.
Another patient with known confirmed COVID-19
disease later passed away on the same day at the Cockburn Town Medical Centre. The
elderly patient was admitted to the hospital and in a critical state. The
patients’ medical condition worsened and efforts to revive the patient were
unsuccessful. The next of kins have been formally
notified and supported.
These unfortunate and consecutive events also
follow the TCI Government announcement of the country’s tenth COVID-19 related
death earlier today.”
Deaths ten, eleven and twelve recorded in a
one-day span underscore the announcement by the National Epidemiologist, that
the situation was critical and an explosive worsening was anticipated.
While there are 17 recoveries, the most recent
situation report informs there was a reinfection of Covid 19; 27 new cases
logged in Providenciales; seven new cases in North Caicos and three new
patients in Grand Turk.
Thirteen people are in hospital.
There were 97 tests performed; 51 returned
negatives for Covid-19.
Overall, Turks and Caicos is now fast
approaching 1,800 cases of the virus, with some 15,468 tests having been
