DECR observes World Wetlands Day 2021

PRESS RELEASE: February 2 marked World Wetlands Day, an important day in the DECR’s green calendar.

This year’s theme for World Wetlands Day ‘Wetlands and Water,’ highlights the importance of wetlands as a source of freshwater and encourages action to restore them and stop their loss.

The Turks & Caicos Islands are fortunate to sport some of the world’s most pristine wetlands in the region, that are important habitats to resident and migratory bird species, juvenile shark and sea turtle, provide important habitats for economically significant fish species and serve as in important barrier protecting the islands from severe weather conditions and flooding.

Each year the DECR, with the hard work and dedication of the Clement Howell High School, and British West Indies Collegiate, clean up our wetlands and plant red mangrove propagules in areas where urban development has taken its toll. Unfortunately, due to the global pandemic, the DECR will not be banding together with the Islands’ eco warriors to clean up and re-plant around these areas. The Department would like to encourage the public, however, to get out into nature and explore and enjoy this precious habitat while walking, kayaking, or paddle boarding.

“Wetlands and mangroves are the perfect place for young people to get fresh air and discover the intricate lives lived by the little creatures that call them home!” stated Amy Avenant, DECR’s Environmental Outreach Coordinator.
