Turks and Caicos Women in Sports represented at the 3rd Annual Advancing Women in Leadership Forum

#Providenciales, October 3, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee hosted its 3rd Annual Advancing Women in Leadership Forum this past Saturday 28th September, 2019 at the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre. This year’s theme: ‘Gender Equality is change and Change is Painful’.

Women in Sports TCI was invited to this event which is quickly becoming a premier event on the Trinidad and Tobago Conference calendar. Women from all professional genres around the world were in attendance and participated, including business, sport, education and politics. Our very own Vice President of Women in Sport and Providenciales Representative Paula Virgil was honored to attend this high level 1 day event.

The primary aim of the conference was to encourage discussion and raise awareness around key challenges surrounding gender equality and to exchange ideas and propose solutions that can be utilized to promote and facilitate the empowerment of women.

The Meeting was opened with a formal welcome from Diane Handerson TTOC Vice President Chair of Women in Sport Commission, Feature Address by The Honourable Shamfa Cudjoe – Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Keynote Speaker Dame Louise Martin – President of the Commonwealth Games Federation. Also making an address was the President of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic and Commonwealth Games Associations Brian Lewis.

The Panel Discussions were greatly rewarding and allowed the participants to speak to issues experienced in their respective countries and to take part in the discussions said Paula Virgil. There were such topics as: What are the Key Factors needed for Gender Equality to Take Hold; Action not words – Goals and measures – Hold leaders accountable?

Gender Equality – Not just a Concept of Female Empowerment. The final session – Social by Journalist Franka Philip dealt with Media and Women – Empowering and Disempowering?

I found that the entire Forum surpassed my greatest expectations, I returned rejuvenated and totally empowered to share my experiences with Women in Sports and the larger communities especially our young girls in the schools. This conference was an ‘eye opener’ for me stated Paula Virgil.
