#Providenciales, October 15th, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Today in the Turks and Caicos Island, we celebrate with the rest of the world International Day of the Girl Child. As the Minister with responsibilities for Education, Youth, Culture, Social and Library Services, I fully support the United Nations observance of equal opportunities for girls and young women in all areas of life.

The Department of Gender Affairs and Department of Social Welfare will be hosting two days of activities commencing October 11th and 12th in the Nation’s Capital geared to toward assisting our girls to be the best that they can be.

Today, October 11, the department of Gender Affairs will celebrate International Day of the Girl Commencing 10: 00a.m, at the St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Dillon Hall. The event will accommodate exhibition booths with designated sub-themes for young girls to receive rewarding and fun content as we celebrate them on this day.  In addition to this, personnel from the department of Gender Affairs along with representatives from the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College, and NGO representatives will share with in morning Devotions at the various schools throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Tomorrow October 12th The Department of Social Services will be hosting a workshop at the Salem Baptist Church on Mission Folly Grand Turk.

The theme of the workshop is ‘The Lady in Me’.  The objective of this workshop is to educate, empower and inspire female students on self-worth and at the same time sensitizing them on how to prevent and report violence; including online violence.  We encourage all girls between the ages of eleven to sixteen (11 – 16) years old to join us.    The workshop will commence at 10:00 a.m. sharp and will conclude at 5:00 p.m.

Our expected outcomes for this workshop are as follows:

§  To assist the girls with identifying their own positive traits and characteristics.

§  Empower the girls to find purpose in life by determining their individual beliefs, values    and direction.

§  Encourage the girls to look inwardly for inspiration, set positive goals and consider the steps needed to achieve each goal.

§  Provide awareness on the possible effect and impact of violence.

We look forward to the communities of the Turks and Caicos Islands’ support at the scheduled activities as we celebrate, uplift, educate and empower our girls. Once again, Happy International Day of the girl child. We celebrate you and pray God’s guidance and protection over your lives, we love you!!
