Bahamas Prime Minister gives surprise speech on Nassau-bound Delta flight

#Nassau, September 30, 2019 – Bahamas – Loud applause filled the cabin of a commercial Delta flight last week when Bahamas Prime Minister, Hubert Minnis gave an unexpected ‘thank you’ speech to passengers.

“I just spoke at the United Nations yesterday and I told them the best way they can assist The Bahamas in terms of our rebuilding; Nassau our economic engine and touristic center has not been affected.  If they can get the message out that we’re still functional, we’re still open or business and the more tourists visit our shores it will put us in a better position to rebuild and get back to normal.”

The Bahamas on September 1 was pounded by Hurricane Dorian which rammed Abaco and Grand Bahama Islands as a historically dangerous category 5 hurricane.

Reports put damages in the billions.  The death toll is 53 with over 600 people still missing. 

While those two islands are crippled and remain in early recovery mode, The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has been vigorously promoting that there are 14 other islands open to visitors.

“So, I want to thank you all personally for visiting The Bahamas.  Thank you and may God continue to bless you.  I do hope that you have an excellent time in The Bahamas so that you can tell your friends and relatives that The Bahamas is still open,” said Rt Hon Dr. Minnis as he addressed the jubilant passengers.

Half of The Bahamas’ gross domestic product, GDP of $5.7 billion is derived from tourism.
