#Providenciales, August 13, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Equipped
with resources that include search, medical and structural assessment capacity,
Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) is a general term used for a group of
specialized rescue skills that are integrated into a team. It provides a
coordinated interagency platform to manage and administer land-based search and
rescue activities. It is a key component of a country’s ability to deal with
the consequences of emergencies or disasters, including (but not limited to)
earthquakes, tropical cyclones, aircraft incidents, terrorist activities, and
hazardous materials releases.
The
Turks & Caicos Islands, like other countries, are susceptible to a number
of natural and man-made hazards which can result in the deployment of USAR
teams. As such, there is a need to ensure that our First Responders and
Volunteers are trained to international and regional standards to assist with
various rescue missions if and when the need arise.
To
further enhance the Country’s capacity in such a critical area, the
Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) will be hosting
an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) training from 12th – 17th
August, 2019. The training will be held at the Department of
Disaster Management and Emergencies’ Conference Room, 1316 Customs
Complex, Leeward Highway, Providenciales.
The
training will be conducted by Mr. Abdias Samuel, National Disaster Coordinator,
National Emergency Management Agency, St. Kitts and Nevis; Mr. George Hazel,
Clinical Services Manager, Emergency Training Institute of Trinidad and Tobago
and Mr. Carlos Bishop, Leading Fire Officer, Barbados Fire Service.
