#Providenciales, August 23, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Turks and
Caicos libraries are open to initiatives which promote reading and United Way
TCI and its Summer Reading Buddy program was welcomed with open arms by Chief
Librarian, Cecil Graham who on Tuesday expressed thanks to the orgranisation.
I want to
thank UnitedWay TCI and all of the sponsors and volunteers who are here
today. Wonderful job, please continue
and as Ms. Ewing said, the library is open!”
Mr. Graham,
who heads government libraries across the country as a part of the Ministry of
Education, Youth, Culture, Social and Library Services said we continue to have
a reading problem in the country.
“We know
reading has been a long-standing problem, and this (Summer Reading Buddy
Program) will in no short measure address some of the problem.”
Even more
children need to be reached, he said.
“We are
here to help the children, whether it is reading, their homework and we have
some exciting programs coming up that we are collaborating with (UnitedWay TCI)
and you will hear more about that.”
The
Summer Buddy Reading Program, explained United Way TCI Executive Director,
Claudine Ewing, enabled 17 children to be paired with an adult buddy for six
weeks. The pair, and in one case a trio,
would meet at the library and spend at least one hour reading and being coached
in reading.
“This has
been my passion, this has been my wish to see that all of the children that
come through our doors that we help them to further their education and this is
one step on the way to helping them to achieve that, preparing them for life…”
On Tuesday, the closing ceremony of the Summer Reading Buddy program was held at the Providenciales Library, where each child was presented a $50 Business Solutions gift certificate, courtesy of Hertz Car Rental & Stanley Williams to shop for back-to-school supplies.
