TCI: Police Sergeant ‘kicked’ at Providenciales night club

#Providenciales, August 26, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – An attempt by Police to deescalate an argument at the Paparazzi Night Club led to a police sergeant being assaulted and a 24-year old man being arrested and charged with the crime.

Police commissioner Trevor Botting said, “The assault on any Police Officer is unacceptable and abhorrent. Being assaulted is not part of the job, Police officers have every right to go to work and come back to their families at the end of their shift unharmed. Your Police Officers are part of your community. They are here to protect you and deserve your respect and care. I hope all sections of the Community and Government join me in condemning this cowardly and despicable assault on our colleague and your Police Officer.”

A video of the scene inside the club was circulated on social media.  It showed EMT workers trying to get to a person – presumably the assaulted police officer – who was curled up on the floor onto their waiting gurney.  Voices on the cell phone video expressed curiosity at what happened but also said the person was kicked by ‘the boy’.

There was a question too about the pace at which the EMT was moving in order to the get the policeman to hospital.

The Police report on Sunday confirmed that the police sergeant had minor injuries and did visit the hospital for an assessment and was released.

“I have spoken to the officer concerned who is recovering at home from his injuries. He will be back serving the community he loves as soon as he is able. Knowing him as I do, he will not be deterred by the small minority. The community is lucky to have him and his colleagues working to keep you safe,” said Commissioner Botting.

That 24-year old who attacked that officer is now charged with assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. The young man remains in police custody.
