#Providenciales, August 2, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – tThe descendants of the black Africans who were victims of slavery were today reminded that they are stronger than the atrocities perpetuated against their ancestors and they were urged to self-reflect on this monumental day in history.
“Emancipation Day offers us the opportunity to
reflect on our history and allows that history to serve as a mirror. When
peering into that mirror, the reflection tells us more about who we are than
what was perpetuated against us; that we are stronger than any system designed
to subjugate us; and that no circumstance or challenge will deter us from being
masters of our own destiny.”
It has been 185 years since slavery was abolished
by the United Kingdom and the Turks and Caicos returns this year to the August
1st commemoration for its public holiday.
During her visit to the Cheshire Hall Slave
Plantation today, Premier Sharlene Robinson said the celebration of
Emancipation on August 1st this year was intentional, and a
statement by the Turks and Caicos to remember the exact date when African
slaves across the British Empire were made free.
Hon Robinson, in her Emancipation Day Message
offered a riveting statement from Jamaican-born, multi-talented and globally
renown founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association; the late Marcus
Garvey.
“Marcus Garvey stated that “A people without
knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without
roots”.
The Premier added, “Knowledge of our history is
essential to charting the course ahead for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
History helps us to understand that we are part of a continuum of perseverance,
pride, strength, ingenuity and resilience. We are rooted in the legacy of our
fore-bearers whose courage and fortitude are our inheritance. Their legacy has
enabled us to arrive at this unique juncture and will propel our nation toward
full mastery of its fate.”
