TCI: Camp Mission Possible

#Providenciales, July 17, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – The Special Needs Unit, Ministry of Health, Agricultural, Sports and Human Services presents “Camp Mission Possible, Together We Make It Possible”,  Therapeutic Camp is the first of its kind in the Turks & Caicos Islands, facilitated by a cadre of  Speech and Language Pathologists, Behavioral Therapists, Occupational Therapists and a Pediatric Physio Therapist of the 1 World Foundation. The Camp commences on  22nd – 26th July, 2019 at the Anglican Dillon Hall, Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands, 9:00am – 2:30pm daily. 

This is a pilot Camp, all children attending would have been assessed by the 1 World Foundation and registered with the Special Needs Unit.

The focus is on each camper abilities and not their disabilities. They will be encouraged to recognize their individual strengths and their own limitations while participating in a safe and fun camp environment!

Overall Objective of the Camp;

ü  increasing skills of independence

ü  enhancing one’s self-esteem

ü  increasing one’s personal understanding and acceptance

ü  increasing social abilities

ü  widening awareness of and participation in recreational activities

ü  connecting with others with similar interests, needs and/or abilities.    

ü  Enjoying the outdoors, inclusive of hippo therapy

Director of Special Needs stated; “Each camper has their own interests, motivators, strengths and areas that might need support. We will strive to meet those unique and individual needs, while also meeting the goals of each camper and the overall objective of the Camp.”

The Minister of Health, Agriculture, Sports and Human Services, Hon Edwin Astwood, stated; “We want to capitalize on the professionals visiting Grand Turk as this is a pilot camp, it is our goal to prepare continuous treatment plans and goals related to the student needs attending the Camp, we hope to improve services with activity such as this being introduced annually throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands. ”
