TCI: Civil Service Summer Internship off to a great start

#Providenciales, June 18, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – The Turks and Caicos Islands Civil Service  Summer Internship Programme was officially launched on Tuesday June 11th in Grand Turk and on Wednesday June 12th, 2019 in Providenciales with students participating in a Civil Service Orientation Programme under the theme “Your Career Starts Now”, aimed at providing a better understanding of:  the aim of the Programme the role and functions of the TCIG Civil Service; the expectations of employers from their employees and the importance of making first and lasting impressions in your workplace and environment.

Following an open expression of interest exercise launched on May 29th, 2019, 65 students have thus far been successfully placed in the TCIG Summer Internship Programme across various ministries and departments, relative to their current studies and future ambitions.

Commenting on the programme, Deputy Governor and Head of the Public Service Her Excellency Anya Williams said; “We are elated to have so many students participate in our summer internship program and hope that they will find the next few weeks to be very enlightening.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Civil Service has long offered opportunities for temporary summer employment, however the programme this year was revamped to attract a much wider group of participants through an open expression of interest process targeted at college students, whereby a shortlisting exercise took place thereafter to appropriately assign persons to areas of work relevant to their courses of study.

We are very pleased with the initial launch of the program and the placements that have taken place thus far, allowing law students to be assigned across the AG Chambers, Office of the DPP and Judiciary; Accounting students to the Ministry of Finance; Design and Building students to the Ministry of Infrastructure; Varied Sciences to the Ministry of Health and various other study placements.

It was great to engage with the students through our orientation programme day on the importance of making first and lasting impressions and on building a strong career and personal brand.

Whilst this may only be temporary employment, the lessons learnt and relationships built during the period can have a lasting impact.

I encourage our students to take full advantage of the programme to gain a hands on understanding of the careers they intend to pursue and hope that on completion of their studies many of them will find successful placements within the public service or across the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
