‘My officers are trained to protect themselves,’ says Acting Commissioner

#Providenciales, June 16, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – A reportedly routine traffic stop in Kew Town early Friday could have been deadly for two police officers who were simply doing their jobs, said Acting Police Commissioner Trevor Botting. 

Suspects initially refused to pull over at the Police officers’ request and when they did, they emerged from the silver-coloured Honda Accord with guns blazing.  The Police report says the suspects fired and gun fire was returned, but no injuries were reported.  

Botting, who actually takes over as TCIs top cop after July, said that his officers are trained to retaliate with the necessary force when there is a threat to their lives and their duties.

The exchange of gunfire happened yesterday around 3:20 a.m.

“This is an unacceptable attempt to harm my officers.  I want to speak on behalf of the brave men and women wo are working the streets across the territory every single day and putting their lives on the line.  This is a warning to the suspects involved this morning and to anyone who thinks that it is okay to attack my officers – we will track you down and we’re going to make sure you are held accountable.”

Soon to be Commissioner, Botting explained, “All we are trying to do is protect this community.  My officers are trained and will use any force necessary to protect themselves.”

The culprits responsible for this ‘unprovoked’ attack on TCI Police remain on the loose. The public is asked to help in finding them by calling Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-8477 or 911.
