#Providenciales, May 8, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Our children can learn how to play the games parents and grand-parents grew up on, and it will be free and fun and held at the historic Turks and Caicos National Museum in Providenciales in commemoration of International Museums Day.

Free and fun is good but National Museum organisers explain that there is a deeper mission in the hosting another ‘Back in the Day’ event.

“This is only one example of the something that helps build a cultural bridge because in sharing our experiences we learn about other cultures and often realize that there are more that unite us than divide us. The 2019 theme for International Museum Day is ‘Museums as cultural hubs: The future of tradition’. The museum’s role in society is evolving to be more community oriented and audience focused. The aim is to transform the museum into a cultural hub where creativity and knowledge combine and the visitors interact, share and become involved in creating the experience.”

The Turks and Caicos National Museum as a cultural hub is a welcomed notion; last year’s Back in the Day event was a hit.

“The children will learn to make their own tops to spin, there will be marbles, top spinning, and skipping competitions, rounders, hopscotch and many other games for the young and young at heart to relive and experience or learn traditional pastimes.”

A Caicos Heritage Homestead Exhibit will also be open for viewing and the Back in the Day on International Museum Day is an important fundraiser.

“There will be no admission fee. Food and drinks will be on sale, there will be raffles for many prizes, annual museum support will be offered at discounted rates, you will have opportunities to help build the new museum by purchasing a foundation brick with your name engraved or donating to the museum building fund.”

International Museum Day and Back in the Day will be celebrated at the museum site in Grace Bay Village from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Residents and visitors are all invited to Back in the Day.
