#Providenciales, May 18, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Rainy, stormy weather is expected again tomorrow according to forecasts and this has forced the postponement of the Turks and Caicos National Museum’s Back in da Day event.
The
celebration, which is staged outdoors at the site of the
soon-to-be-constructed, Providenciales branch of the National Museum, was a hit
last year with its exciting showcases of indigenous culture.
Regrettably,
organisers, earlier today made the decision to postpone the event which was
organized to coincide with the global commemoration of International Museums
Day on May 18, 2019.
The
tradition of a day to focus on museums dates back to 1977, according to the
International Council of Museums, ICOM.
At its website, there was this reason given for the occasion…
“The objective of International Museum Day (IMD) is to raise awareness
of the fact that, Museums are an important means of cultural exchange,
enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and
peace among peoples. Organised on 18 May
each year or around this date, the events and activities planned to celebrate
International Museum Day can last a day, a weekend or an entire week. IMD was
celebrated for the first time 40 years ago. All around the world, more and more
museums participate in International Museum Day.”
Last year, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in about 158 countries and territories, Turks and Caicos Islands included.
