TCI: George Brown Post Office entering the competitive market of imports says Post Master General

#Providenciales, May 9, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – While the idea of a post office understandably seems antiquated in this era where information moves almost as quickly as the speed of light, the Post Master General says the plan is to be competitive and relevant at the government post office.

“We will be able to offer new and improved, better customer service to the general public, better customer satisfaction, increased productivity and be able to advance our bottom line which will increase our revenue.”

China post and E-Bay relationships will be strengthened said Mrs. James, and there was more.

“We will soon unveil a partnership with stakeholders with products ordering through Amazon, and we will deliver directly to the customers in Turks and Caicos Islands through the post office.  No more (need for) delivery to US address by using extended third-party services to bring our good to the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

The striking remarks came at the official opening ceremony of the George Brown Post Office on Tuesday May 7, 2019.  Elizabeth James, Post Master General of the Turks and Caicos Islands brought a refreshed perspective at the packed event.

Imports to the Turks and Caicos Islands have skyrocketed in recent years, rapidly returning to the peak figures marked between 2007-2009; Mrs. James believes the post office can carve out a slice in the prosperous pie.

At the block-laying ceremony in June 2018, then Minister of Home Affairs, Delroy Williams spoke to the potential of the post office.

“It is also very important to know that although many private delivery services are operating in the Turks and Caicos, there is still a very strong demand for post office boxes and the postal services in this country.  We have seen this from the activity at the temporary location in the Town Centre Mall and the boxes in Grace Bay. We cannot run away from technology. We must embrace it.”

Williams today takes on the role of Minister of Border Control, Labour and Employment Services in a cabinet shuffle which takes effect today, May 8, 2019 according to Premier Sharlene Robinson.

Post Master James told Magnetic Media the post office officially opens to the general public on Monday; this week will be used to move into the new $1.5 million Jamalco construction. 

Some 3,500 post office boxes are housed at the site named in honour of the late George Brown, who once served as the island’s post master and who hails from Blue Hills.
