TCI: Mega One Triton removal bill skyrocketed to possible $3.7 million

#Providenciales, April 27, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – The vexing shipwreck, Mega One Triton and its absconded owner are increasingly a hugely expensive headache for the Turks and Caicos Islands as the bill to remove the cargo vessel has now climbed to nearly $4 million dollars according to the latest budget estimates.

During this week’s meeting of the Appropriations Committee of the House of Assembly, it was exposed that there are three lines of funding for the vessel to be removed.  One from the Development Fund to the tune of $1.8 million, another line of monies from the Infrastructure Fund – which is a TCIG and Carnival Cruise Line account – pegged at $1.5 million and a smaller, but still significant line item appears on the Ports Authority ledger for $407,000.

Cumulatively, $3.7 million USD to remove the derelict and deserted cargo ship.

Due to some probing by Appropriations Committee Chairman, Hon Doug Parnell it was confirmed that a possible $3.7 million will be spent to remove the boat which shipped goods from the Dominican Republic to the Turks and Caicos Islands until it ran aground in Superstorm Sandy in October 2012 off the famous, Governor’s Beach in Grand Turk.

Both the Rufus Ewing led administration of the PNP and the Sharlene Robinson led administration of the PDM have been unable to remove the trade boat and its toxic cargo off the beach.
