TCI: Ahead of Hurricane Preparedness Month, over 70 islanders volunteer for shelter management

#Providenciales, April 24, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Nearly two dozen people are already registered for the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies volunteer Shelter Management Workshop in Providenciales, and 50 volunteers participated in trainings held in other islands of the archipelago.

Among the topics covered were: an overview of risk management, the TCI National Disaster Management System and problem-solving approaches.

The DDME confirmed that of the 50 individuals who completed the training and 60 percent were males. 

“Sessions were well attended, lively and thought provoking for participants as they did table top exercises, sketched floor plans of shelters inspected, set up a shelter and tackled likely issues that would arise from shelterees.”

The Shelter Management Training across the Turks & Caicos Islands and was facilitated by DDME with Mr. Desmond Lightbourne as the Lead Facilitator. Trainings have been completed in Salt Cay, South Caicos, Grand Turk along with North and Middle Caicos.

The Providenciales training is set for tomorrow through Friday; April 24-26, 2019 from  8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
