Dominican Poachers arrested; 8 to face fisheries charges

#Providenciales, April 11, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Two poacher vessels and eight Dominican men were all taken into custody after being caught illegally fishing in Turks and Caicos waters last week Wednesday (April 3, 2019).

A TCIG media statement explained that DECR officers intercepted the poachers on the south side of the Caicos Bank with marine product on board. 

“Officers intercepted two poacher vessels in the vicinity of Whale Breakers, in the act of illegal fishing. One vessel, a 22ft Panga powered by two 40 horse-power Yamaha engines and another 22ft Panga powered by two 60 horse-power engines, as well as eight suspects were apprehended.”

The Department of Environment and coastal Resources informed that the men will face charges and be prosecuted according to the Fisheries Protection Ordinance and the Fisheries Limits Ordinance.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity on the ocean.
