TCI: Major ‘change’ being delivered by PDM government – days are numbered now for illegal jitneys

#Providenciales, March 18, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – White sedans with two turquoise strips running the length of each side will soon roll the streets of the Turks and Caicos Islands and will eradicate illegal jitneys and open the door to a legal form of privately owned, public transportation.

Community Cabs were heralded to replace the illegal jitneys which for the most part provide an essential service to the non-motoring public. However, reports of robberies, altercations, cramped quarters and sexual assaults doomed the service and within months they are likely to become extinct.

Minister of Home Affairs, Delroy Williams, who coined the term ‘Community Cabs’ said the first license has already been issued and next week, there will be a presentation by the Road Traffic Department to the first Community Cab Operator.

Among the requirements to be licensed as a Community Cab operator is a business license, TCI tourist Board training, and an annual feel of under $425.

Fares will range from $3 to $7 per person and there are restrictions which protect the popular taxi route of hotel to airport.
